What is the MAS Program?
Middle School Aerospace
Scholars (MAS) is a unique program for teams of Texas middle
school teachers. The
program is funded by the State of Texas and administered by NASA
Johnson Space Center. Teachers apply online as teams of 2 or 4
from the same school. Teams of 2 consist of a math and science
teacher. Teams of 4 consist of a math, science, language arts,
and social studies teacher. School Administrators are welcome
to join MAS and may be substituted for the Social Studies or Language
Arts teacher in a Team of 4. Selected teachers participate in
the following:
- A
one-week summer professional development workshop at Johnson
Space Center in Houston,TX. Teams will learn to integrate NASA
instructional materials into their classroom curriculum and
develop an action plan to implement during the following school
year. Transportation, lodging, meals, and related activities
are funded through the MAS program.
- Behind-the-scenes
tours of JSC, briefings with scientists, engineers, and astronauts,
and instruction on utilizing numerous online NASA resources.
- Three
distance learning events at your own school during the following
school year. These events are hosted by JSC and give students
an opportunity to interact with experts in the space program.
Any additional costs related to these events are the responsibility
of the participating school and/or school district.
